Don't worry, two hours after writing the above post I found out that a friend (basically) killed themselves. They're in a coma right now and if they wake up for some bizarre reason they're going to just try again until it sticks. And the worst thing about it is that I totally understand and respect their decision. Fun!

I'm really sorry to hear this, and I hope your friend miraculously emerges from the coma glad to be alive. I fight pretty hard to refrain from doing something permanent, despite all the heartbreak & struggle. I hope your friend's struggle doesn't undermine your current zest for life.
