In my post-radio show brainhaze I decided to see if I could find out anything about The Monkey Run, who were a pop/punk band from mid-80s Manchester. I remember not coming up with anything when I first pulled the 7" out of a dollar bin a few years ago. This time I found one of the members, Mark Hodkinson, who had this to say about his former band: "By now, we were enthralled by The Smiths and The Chameleons (for whom I've written album liner notes) and it bore little resemblance to the old stuff. We released two singles and an EP, supporting bands like The Stone Roses, The Chameleons and The Wedding Present. Our highpoint was recording a Radio One session." It's good stuff.
I sent him an e-mail telling him that his music was still getting radio airplay and included a link to my playlist. I got a response a few hours later, thanking me for playing the 7" and offering a copy of the CD anthology. He CC'd the rest of the band on the e-mail and I just got a second reply from a different member of the band, Jim Stringer:
I'm a bit emotional at the news.
In a week that's been quite difficult to navigate, this has made me very happy.
We were fckin' awesome.
I love you all - especially you, Yoni.
Jim
That's just so wonderful and sweet. Weeeee!
