For those of you who don't know my backstory, here's the super, super quick version:
0-3 Israel
3-6 Philly
6-12 Israel
12-18 Florida
18-Now Philadelphia
My parents were both born in the States, though my dad emigrated to Israel in 1949, at age 21 or so. I grew up speaking both English and Hebrew in the house, though my English was a tad rudimentary. My spoken was decent and I read voraciously, but because I didn't have any actual educational background in the language, my grammar and spelling were not that great. This came out the most whenever I would try and write anything in English.
In 5th grade I started taking English lessons once a week after school with a bunch of other kids in the same position as me re: language background. I was cleaning out a box earlier and found a little notebook from that class that I made as part of an exercise. The front cover has my name and some pictures I cut out to represent my interests, which at the time apparently included photography, radio controlled cars, camping, baseball, and monkeys. Oh, and darts. About that: We had a board in the backyard and my friends and I spent countless hours playing. Throwing sharp things is fun, even if you never really learned how to aim. I do remember perfecting my underhand and blindfolded throws, though. Kind of like when I learned how to ride my bike while standing on the seat or the top tube. Fun! Dangerous! Dangerous fun!
The first page of the notebook is entitled The A.B.C.'s about ME! and this is what it says (with original spelling, of course!):
Afraid of nothing
Brany (smart)
Curb
Dareing I am dareing
Ears I have good ears.
Funny I am funny.
Gold I am as good as gold
Hay I hit the hay every night
Instincts, I have good instincts
