From the AP:

BAGHDAD, Iraq -
Saddam Hussein's trial for the killing of 180,000 Kurds in the 1980s resumed Monday with the late dictator's seat empty, nine days after he went to the gallows. The court's first order of business was to drop all charges against Saddam.

Bet you didn't see that coming, eh? Lucky bastard, getting off the hook like that.

In other news, I was just telling [livejournal.com profile] purveyorofchaos about the first music files I ever downloaded off the Internet. It was 1995, I believe, or maybe even 1994, and I was up on the DGC Web site. It wasn't this one, as that's from 1996. I can't remember/find the URL for the old DGC Web site or I'd pull up the archived version for y'all to gawk at. The files I downloaded weren't even full songs. They were .wav clips, maybe 30 seconds long, and hella big. Well, they might not have been that big, but over a 14.4 modem they took forever to download. It was awesome.

Oh, and the songs? It was totally a clip from Nirvana's Unplugged in New York - "The Man Who Sold the World", I believe - and one from the Hole song "Miss World" off of Life Through This. You remember 1995, right? Good times. I listened to those clips over and over again, marveling at how ridiculous and wonderful it was to be able to download music off the Internet. They sounded like shit coming through the shitty battery-operated speakers but I didn't care, not one bit. I even remember playing them for my mom in that, "HOLYSHITTHISISTHEBESTTHINGEVER" kind of way. She was impressed, though not at the music, or the fact that it took two hours to download. I don't think we were on an hourly plan at that point, but we might have been. Don't give me that look, it wasn't AOL or Prodigy. In 1994, we were using Netcom. While it didn't exactly rule, it was a lot better than AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve, etc. Plus, it was way, way, way more *1337. And really, is there anything more important than that?
