Actually, it's because I'm allegedly a lurker - though I've posted comments as recently as Thursday - who is friends with people who are known trolls. When I asked the mod who these people are, they wouldn't tell me. *shrug* Whatever. I'd be happier if they just said, "Look, we're going to make it a totally safe space for people of color and thus we're going to get rid of all the white people. No offense meant!" I wouldn't have taken any offense to that. Safe space are important! dot_race_snark because of my membership in save_swastikas. This is funny because the latter clearly states that it is an anti-Nazi community, created to discuss and celebrate a symbol that was completely perverted by Adolf Hitler and his followers. I mean, hell, I wear a Swastika bead necklace that came from Singapore by way of eBay. I wear it because it's a good luck charm, it reminds me to strive towards balance in my life, I like being the bad ass Jew with the Swastika necklace, and I hate Nazis. That being said, I know better than to wear the necklace outside of my shirt. Having to explain all that to literally everyone just wouldn't be very fun. Also, I don't want people to think that I'm a Nazi. That's simply a stupid thing to invite on yourself. I think I've told maybe a dozen friends about it*. It's my necklace and my beliefs and I don't see much of a reason to share things like that with others unless the topic comes up. It's definitely dicey ground and I'm well aware of that. However, I truly think Swastikas are fucking awesome symbols, up there in my world with the Hamsa and the rabbit's foot (just kidding vegans!), and it pisses me off that the Nazis co-opted something that in many cultures signifies balance, harmony, and the cyclic nature of the universe.
For the tl;dr crowd: Religious symbolism meaning balance/etc. good, Nazis bad, end of story.
Oh, and check this out! I was looking through the Wiki entry for the Swastika and found this:
A swastika shape is an ancient symbol in the culture of the Kuna people of Kuna Yala, Panama. In Kuna tradition, it symbolizes the octopus that created the world; its tentacles, pointing to the four cardinal points.
Not only is that fucking awesome, but the Kuna apparently live in an autonomous region within the Panamanian borders - the Kuna Yala - that has existed since 1930! That is so cool. Octopi and autonomy, together at last!**
